The Company has a long-term vision of environmental stewardship, particularly as an operator in Africa. At Sigma, we have established an Environmental Management Program to ensure our operations comply with all applicable local legislation. Our approach prioritises environmental risk mitigation from the earliest stages of exploration through to post-closure, supported by comprehensive mine closure and land reclamation plans.
We recognise that achieving self-sufficiency is a gradual process that begins with adopting best environmental practices across our workforce. We are committed to continuous improvement through regular monitoring, auditing, and review of our environmental performance. This includes reducing environmental impacts and using resources more efficiently. Transparency and accountability remain central to our approach, and we continue to strengthen our commitments in these areas. Beyond compliance, we aim to exceed regulatory requirements by setting and pursuing higher internal environmental standards.
Sigma is committed to developing and maintaining environmental management systems aligned with internationally recognised standards. These systems are implemented across all levels of the organisation, with strong leadership from senior management. We are also working to enhance self-sufficiency in food management by supporting internal agricultural initiatives and sourcing produce and livestock from local communities. To minimise waste, we promote practices such as recycling and composting. Additionally, we continuously work to reduce our environmental footprint through initiatives such as advanced Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs), community-focused water stewardship programmes, and the transition towards lower-carbon energy sources. Routine monitoring of water, air, and soil quality forms a key part of our environmental management efforts.
In Kenya, Sigma adheres to the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) 1999 (Amendment 2015). We have also implemented an Environmental Rehabilitation and Restoration Plan, which outlines clear procedures for restoring sites affected by exploration and operational activities, ensuring responsible environmental management throughout the project lifecycle.
