We recognise the significant impact our operations can have on the communities in which we work. At Sigma, we are committed to empowering these communities by investing in programmes that support long-term, sustainable development for local people, their environment, and the broader economy.
Our goal is to create a lasting and positive legacy, ensuring that even after mining activities have ended, the regions we have operated in continue to thrive and prosper.
Our Approach
We understand the complexities of implementing initiatives that deliver meaningful impact, as well as the risks of investing without a clear and coherent strategy.
At Sigma, we prioritise strong community engagement to build mutually beneficial relationships. Through these channels, we identify and develop key projects that offer the greatest potential for positive impact. While we provide funding where necessary, a central focus of our strategy is capacity building—equipping local communities with the skills and resources needed to drive self-sustaining development.
By collaborating closely with communities, we aim to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the projects we support. We encourage community ownership of these initiatives so that their benefits continue well beyond the life of our mining operations. Our Social Management Plan (SMP) provides a structured framework for managing community-related matters and mitigating any potential adverse impacts arising from our activities.
Our Community Development Plan commits Sigma to implementing annual projects that deliver sustainable value to surrounding communities. In addition, our Stakeholder Engagement Plan identifies key stakeholders, assesses their influence on our operations, and guides how we engage with each group effectively.
We also maintain robust grievance and dispute resolution mechanisms, enabling community members to raise concerns or complaints. Our approach is to seek fair and amicable resolutions directly with affected parties wherever possible, before involving external third parties.
